Alicia Charlton
Alicia Charlton was born in 1979, growing up in Bentinck Township, a rural area outside of Chesley, Ontario. Lee began her artistic endeavours at a young age, starting with simple pencil sketchings of the Grandmother's property and soon moving to charcoal studies of animals ranging from a gentle chickadee to the tranquil beauty of a deer grazing in her Grandfather's back field. Lee's family instilled a great appreciation for the outdoors and nurtured her love of wildlife and when an aunt from the Waterloo area invited her to a client's art studio she readily agreed. As soon as she set foot in the studio Alicia felt the impact of sculpting fall upon her and she discovered her true passion. "I am just so grateful. If I wouldn't have walked into that studio I would never have known and now I can't imagine a life without [sculpting]." In the year 2000 Alicia Charlton moved to Waterloo and began her career with Lund'ys Sculptures. Under Maurice Lunds watchful eyes, Lees sculpting began to blossom. Grasping the sculpting techniques quickly Lee became more experimental with detailing, finding great reward in making hard rock appear pliable. "I love the concept of taking an inanimate object and uncovering this life and movement that defies its exterior, releasing the potential of the space within." As 2003 came to a close Alicia's career altered. Maurie announced that after apprenticing under him since 2000 it was now time for Lee to take the forefront as Maurie retired from carving. Alicia moved the studio back to the country to continue on the path Lund'ys set for her.
TIME: the before, the now and the moment yet to come.MOTION: how it came to be, how it is and what comes next. In each piece I strive to convey three motions, not just moments. We tend to view pieces of art, and especially carvings as one precise moment, frozen in time. But what brought that exact moment to pass and what will the anticipated result be?? The subjects of my pieces have a history that brought them to this moment in time and will continue past it. So does the stone I use. It, in itself, has a life that continues beyond my work. I feel the more animation, feeling and movement I can incorporate into the piece, the more I can capture the character and the uniqueness of the subject. The most demanding stage of creating a sculpture is the beginning. Because each stone is different, adequate time must be devoted on the initial design stage to fully utilize the shape, colour, texture and characteristics of the piece. Adding to this fact, all sculptures are hand-carved, making every piece a "one-of-a-kind" original. No reproduction or duplicates can ever be achieved. Each piece is always "As Unique as You". A signed and dated "Certificate of Authenticity" accompanies each piece, recording the stone type, registration number and sculpture description.
