Have you ever seen Prince Edward Island in the month of June when all the trees are all out and the wildflowers are everywhere? It is my most favorite month of all. The colours are all so intense; I say it is an artist's paradise. I now live and have a gallery in the town of Kensington, where I am just minutes away from beautiful beaches of the north shore.
I am of Acadian descent, grew up on a farm in Abram's Village, and had a wondrous and adventurous childhood. We were outside playing all the time, in the woods behind our house or down at the shore. Nature it seems was always a part of my life and the only time I feel at peace is when I am sitting in the middle of the woods or on an isolated beach. I would sit for hours and watch nature: birds, ants, fish, etc. Almost anything could catch my attention for hours if it was part of the world outside.
In 1979, I studied Arts History at Mount Allison University, in New Brunswick then went on to study Graphic Design at George Brown College in Toronto. After my studies, I wanted an adventure so I traveled and worked all across Canada. I was awed by its grandeur and spectacular sceneries. Then, I decided I wanted to work in the Third World and ended up in Haiti for a few years. This, I believe, was a strong influence in how I paint today. Haitians had wonderful bright colours in their daily lives and in their art. I fell in love with it all and it shows in my work. I want to bring out the rich colours that I see deep inside nature, the warmth and details of it all.
In 2002, I decided to stop working for other people and go full time into my art career. Best decision I have ever made!!! During the many moments when I doubt myself, I always remember the words of my drawing teacher on my last day at George Brown College, "Anne, your hands are made of gold, all you have to do is apply yourself".Now that I have painted many pieces of art, I can see my work progressing. Another great art teacher of mine once said, "Hope that you never do a perfect painting because that is when you stop learning". Every time I finish a painting, I feel I have conquered something, a part of PEI, but there is always something else to paint. It is not the ideas that are lacking but the time to paint all that you want to paint. I love to paint clouds and I try to grasp a moment with birds in flight or special places like in "Flying into the Storm". Those are the kinds of visions I like to recreate, "special moments".
As I continue to paint, I feel myself getting more particular about my work and I am able to bring out more of what I want to portray. Nature is always perfect in it imperfections. I love history and nostalgia. Lighthouses are a particular attraction to me, old barns and machinery which reflect a time gone by, and the eternal coast line, forever changing with every tide. I welcome you to visit my gallery online.
If you happen to visit PEI sometime, please come visit my gallery in the town of Kensington, just across from the old train station. If you wish to take an art class, I will be offering art classes all summer. Hope to see you there!
