I had taken my very first smallest bear to a lady in town whose husband had carved soapstone for many years. I wanted to show her what I was able to do. But before I could show her she wanted me to see her sculptures. I came inside her home and she had sculptures everywhere. Including life size bears, a Canadian goose, and many many more. Then she said she wanted to see my little bear. Well, after seeing her work I was almost embarrassed to show her. But I did and she was very supportive, and she told me that I have a true talent that even I can not fully see yet. She told me to keep coming to her home with every bear or sculpture that I had finished so that she can CRITIC it. I kept going to her home and she critiqued my art. I had finally made it my goal that I would carve the biggest bear that I had ever done try to show her that I had learned from all of her critiques. I took the finished bear to her and she was immediately impressed. The room suddenly became very very quiet......and at last she said "I am sorry, but I do not have a critique to tell you on this one because it is absolutely done perfectly, the form, the proportions, the finish is incredible". I jumped so high and gave her a huge hug and a kiss. I was so happy!!!! That is the reason why I call it "THE" BEAR! because it was THEEE best one I had ever done at that point.
