Canadian Artist Dean John Herbert

Biography

Canadian artist Dean John Herbert is a self-taught pencil artist born in Wainwright, raised in Edgerton, Alberta, and completed Grades 10, 11 & 12 in Lacombe in hopes of learning more about drawing. Now he resides in Edgerton and is finally getting a start in art as a career.

He was always more interested in drawing humans, but as he grew older, he has learned wildlife, and older buildings have always been more appealing to him.

He has started a series of old barns, starting with a barn he drives by every day on his way to work (Reid Barn). Every day you could see how busy it used to be.

He first started drawing when he was very young. He does remember his first drawing was of the Incredible Hulk in colored pencil. Although he has painted, he still prefers graphite pencil, and has always focused on perfecting the art. He loves to draw and he always will. Although he has not perfected the art, he draws every day and continues to get better.

He was a big collector of comic books when he was younger. He was hooked, but not because of the storyline. He collected them because of the artwork. Fairlane was one of the best artists he had seen in comic books because of the amount of detail.

Comic books got him interested in art, as well as drawing people. He finds drawing people difficult, trying to capture the likeness of the individual, but is finding it much easier now than it was when he was starting. Trying to capture the look in the eye and the smile, or frown on the face and making it still look like the person you started drawing.

McCallum's Trucking - By Canadian Pencil Artist Dean John Herbert He doesn't know how many erasers he has gone through or how much paper has gone to waste, but he knows it has been alot.

When he was in school, he found it quite difficult to concentrate on what the teachers were saying. He was more interested in how they stood or the way their faces looked. Every line, every curve. He would draw and doodle on his workbooks and binders until they were covered. He thinks some of the teachers thought he was crazy or just plain dumb.

So he draws on, whenever he can. He took carpentry and thought that it would make a good career. He had a lot of fun and really enjoyed finishing work, and still do, but he still wasn't satisfied. But because the world revolves around money, he hasn't been able to draw as much as he would have liked.

When he was younger, his dad got him and his brother to work in the shop (Herbie's Auto), but already at that young age he was dreaming of becoming an artist. He doesn't know how many years he worked there fixing tires, pumping gas, cleaning floors, changing oil, and so on. He did have some fun working with some really good people (his dad especially), even though we never really saw eye-to-eye sometimes. But this was because he was dreaming of being something else and not becoming a mechanic.

He bounced from job to job, keeping the money barely rolling in. Now, he is 33 years old, met a really great woman who is still trying to straighten him up. A father and mother who have both gone through a really hard time with him since the beginning, and both have helped alot. He now drives truck for his father, drawing his pictures on the steering wheel.
