![]() Canadian Artist Dee Poisson |
Dee Poisson has been drawing for most of her life and now because of her success, has made it a career. She enjoys working in almost all mediums but delights in the tranquility and relaxation provided by graphite or colored pencil.
Dee has completed "pet" projects over the years for many people. Her love for animals is evident by the images she produces. Engaging portraits of horses, cats even alpacas have passed over her drafting table but her special talent is reserved for dogs.
Dee spends time each year drawing retired police dogs for canine unit members. Members of the Calgary Police Canine Unit have commissioned up to 14 dog drawings from Dee since 1996. She has now added work for canine unit members from other cities as well.
Dee's abiding love for dogs stems from her childhood memories of growing up on a cattle ranch near Drumheller, Alberta. The dog was a part of the every day routine of cattle work but at the end of the day the dog was a part of the family. Dee remembers many childhood activities that included the ranch German Shepherd, Smokey. On many occasions, Dee would find herself on the front porch running her small hand over the face of her dog, an act that would prove to be invaluable when she became a dog portrait artist later in life.
Dee has participated in several group shows
Her awards include:
Vivian Thierfelder Trophy for Best Artistic Image at the Orchid Society of Alberta Show in Edmonton - 2002.
Jean Stephanson Award - ACACA Alberta Wide Art show - 2003
Merrit Award, Advanced Category - ACACA Southern Zone Show 2004
Dee is a board member of the Okotoks Arts Council, and an executive member of the Alberta Community Art Clubs Association and recently she joined the Colored Pencil Society of America.
