Doug Welykholowa - Canadian Watercolor Artist
Alberta Artist Doug Welykholowa

Biography

Doug was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, in 1948. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan, he joined the Canadian Army as an Artillery Officer. Throughout his Army career, he had the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe, the USA and across Canada.

Up to 1978, his main artistic expression was through black & white photography, while he dabbled with various drawing and painting media. Since then, he has devoted his spare time to developing his skills as a water media painter, primarily with transparent watercolor. Doug took a number of formal art classes in university, but for the most part, he is a self-taught artist. He is also an accomplished computer graphic artist and he has gained extensive experience in desktop publishing and fine art printing throughout his career.

Doug retired from the Army in 2002, after 30 years of service, and now lives in Emerald Park, SK, just east of Regina, with his wife Nancy, an OR Nurse Consultant, where he operates his art business, PrairieGrass Studios, in his home on a full time basis.

Doug's prairie upbringing has been the major influence in his art, which concentrates on rural landscapes, old buildings and derelict machinery. In his paintings he strives to capture a sense of his own feelings, experiences and appreciation for the beauty, color and texture of the landscape and the artifacts of prairie life.

Formerly a member of the Ottawa Art Association, the Cumberland Township Arts and Crafts Guild and the Manotick Art Association, Doug participated in a number of exhibitions and juried art shows in the Ottawa region from 1986 to 1990, and exhibited regularly at the Ottawa Little Theatre. In 1989 he won "First Prize" for watercolors at the Annual Gloucester Juried Art and Photography Exhibition. In the three years previous to that, he won the "Mayor's Prize" and two "Viewer's Choice" awards together with an "Honourable Mention" at the Annual Cumberland Juried Art Show. He also had three paintings selected for gifts to members of parliament and local government.

In 1990 and 1991, two of his paintings were chosen to hang in the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina as part of the Arts Saskatchewan Juried Art Exhibition, and two paintings were selected for the Sherwood Credit Union (now Conexus) annual calendars. In July 2005, one of Doug's paintings, "Still Standing", was awarded the "Gallery's Choice" award at the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase art show.

Doug's paintings hang in private collections across Canada, in the USA, England, Germany and Australia. Doug has also painted a number of military watercolors for private collections and for gifts to units and departing commanding officers.

Doug's Gilc'e prints can be viewed at Lakeshore Antiques in Sylvan Lake, AB, Phone (403) 887-6658, website: http://www.lakeshoreantiques.com
