Ed Cleave has been interested in art all his life. As a student in school he was constantly doodling on his papers. Art classes were the highlight of his school life. Ed worked for 40 years at a variety of jobs, none of which were connected with his artistic abilities. For 30 years he worked for companies as a welder/machinist. Whenever something amusing would happen at work, Ed would draw a cartoon picture and present it to whoever was involved in the situation. He was first known artistically for his cartoons and even contributed to the local paper in Maple Ridge for a year or so. 25 years ago, Ed started using India Ink as an art medium. He has done sketches and pointillism. In 1984 he decided to try his hand at watercolours and he has used that medium the most often since then, although he occasionally goes back to India Ink for a change. Soapstone has always interested Ed, although other than a carving or two done many years ago, he never returned to it until this past year. His soapstone carvings provided him with another opportunity to try a different medium.
The inspiration for Ed's pictures comes from a variety of sources. His rustic cars, trains etc. have been photographed in various areas of the province. Whenever he is out for a drive and sees old abandoned cars, farm or sawmill equipment, he stops and takes pictures for some future painting. Ed has visited Japan several times and the Oriental paintings come from photographs he has taken while visiting there. Ed has been retired for 5 years and has enjoyed the opportunity to focus on what has been his passion all his life - his art work! He spends many hours a day painting. He often mats and frames his own paintings, as he enjoys putting together the entire product. Although he is basically self-taught, Ed has taken a couple of courses with Brent Heighton, an artist he has grown to admire. Ed is married and lives in the countryside with his wife in Maple Ridge, B.C. They have 6 grown children and a number of grandchildren. Be sure to visit Ed's website to view more of his artwork!
