Ellen Cowie - The Early Years

Ellen Cowie - The Early Years

My first oil painting I did when I was 18 in high school, the fall of 1979. My high school teacher gave me instruction on the main colour palette and gave advice as I painted. It was the first time I had ever tried oil painting and it is still my favourite painting. Perhaps because it is of my father but mainly I think it is a very strong still life for an artist’s first oil painting. I had done many pencil portraits and was afraid of the oil and colour so I did this still life of his RCAF photo and his hat he had stored away. I figured the old black and white photo was a safe way to start to paint in oils! I was married the following September and didn’t paint again until 1983. The Air Force painting is 20 by 24 inches and is the only oil painting I did and signed with my maiden name, Donnelly.
