Ellen Cowie - The Early Years

Ellen Cowie - The Early Years

I did this from life in 2004. It is of my daughter Katelyn who was working that summer at Foot’s Bay in Muskoka. The painting took many, many hours, days and sittings to complete. It proved to me that doing portraits from life is quite frustrating for the subject sitting, completely still, for hours upon hours, day after day. I did some photo work to try to spare her some of the hours of posing but the photos flattened my daughter so they were useless to me. I was becoming frustrated with my portrait of her. The final and about eighth day, we locked the door, and I promised her if she would not move an inch, not speak, and be like a statue I was close enough I could finish it. After four more hours of her sitting I finally captured her and her expression of “are you finished yet?”
