"Whimsical Images for a Not-So-Whimsical World" It is my heartfelt desire to lift the spirit and bring joy to the hearts of people everywhere. God has gifted me with a desire to create and an ability to work with my hands. To deny this would be to deny my own existence." James R Galts-Goldsmith
I was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 2, 1954.
When I was five years old, I started making my own toys. The joy of working with my hands grew and developed as time passed. By the time I was a teenager, I discovered I was able to take images from the world around me and create two and three dimensional likenesses in wood carvings, pen and ink drawings as well as oil and water color paintings.
In 1978, I formed Galts Goldsmithing Incorporated - a Jewelry Design Studio that continues to operate until this day.
In 1993, I co-founded the Stone Sculptors Guild of North America and held the position of President for the first five years. My passion for stone resulted in the creation of six monumental sculptures that are now placed in various areas around the city. Three of these now reside in Calgary's downtown core with the balance located in three of her suburbs - one in the sculpture Garden of Mount Royal College, another in Signal Hill Park and the final one in Varsity at the entrance to Bow Valley Christian Church. Each piece weighs from two tons to six tons and was finished entirely by hand.
At the same time, I was actively involved with "Art is Vital" - a cutting edge gallery that I was involved with from its inception in the Eau Claire Market until the gallery closed approximately 10 years later. The opportunity provided me with the skills and experience of creating art while interacting with a live audience.
I have been a full member of the Alberta Society of Artists since 1995.
In 2003, I started to develop my "Whimsey Collection" - a series of oil paintings intended to portray a childlike delight in the world around us.
2008 marks my thirtieth anniversary as a Jewelry Designer, Diamond Setter, Hand Engraver, Sculptor and Artist. I am privileged to have many of my pieces in private and corporate collections around the world.
