His Majesty poses at the edge of the Bow Valley River Basin near Carseland, Alberta. This is his domain. Occasionally, he can be spotted throughout the day if the unexpected rousts him from his bed or cover. However, more sightings are likely to occur at dawn - just before the sun rises or at twilight just after the sun sets. At such times, he moves in the evening from the cover in the valleys to graze in the open fields adjacent to the river basin, then returns in the morning to the river to quench his thirst and to settle-in as digestion continues. The protection of the valley is traded back and forth for the cloak of evening darkness.
In the composition, "His Majesty", the prime buck is shown in realistic detail as his hide stretches over his skull, neck and shoulder. The landscape occupies the lower third of the drawing illustrating his domain. It becomes less detailed and definite towards the horizon to portray the distance and the expanse. The sky provides the background for the upper two thirds of the drawing and creates a vast array of in-between shades of light and dark. Its reflective light augments the mass of the antlers which is the crowning glory for such a prime buck. The background sets the mood for "His Majesty" to reign supreme.
