I was born at a little village in the Rocky Mountains. Shortly thereafter my family moved (with me) to the B.C. coast. There I stayed, but World War II and a four-year stint with the airforce - mostly in Europe, interrupted this. On my return and with a veteran's grant I attended the old Vancouver Art School for 2 years. I had been scribbling sketches on blackboards at school as well as every blank piece of paper I could find, so it was at a very early age that my life's career was pointed out to me.
After leaving the art school, I spent time as an artist for the B.C. Electric Company, then some free-lance time as a commercial artist, then eventually wound up as art director and creative director at the Vancouver office of Canada's largest advertising agency.
I finally tired of the commercial end, and started up a wildlife magazine. For some years, as well as being the publisher and editor, I made time to do cover paintings and story illustrations. I thoroughly enjoyed this period, but economics finally forced me to turn to something else. Now the things I had been avidly learning in the past few years became a way of making a living, and I began painting and selling original wildlife studies. During this time I created about 30 paintings each year and sold virtually all of them. This was achieved through one-man shows, commissions, and even walk-ins. I also sold paintings to various corporations and the B.C. Government.
However, even while I was wallowing in this success I was working on country landscapes, which is how I now spend my days. I do this by driving my old pick-up around the country roads of upper Vancouver Island (where my best friend, my wife, and I now live) and into the mountains through old logging roads where I paint and take photographs, if I can steal enough time from another passion, fly-fishing.
