Canadian Artist Jim Pescott
Jim Pescott

Biography

"As a kid I loved the woods and fields, I have such strong memories."

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Jim spent his youth in the country road, rural environments of the Fraser Valley where damp, dark rainforests constantly sought to reclaim farm fields, floodplains supported fauna and fertility, and the ecology was filled with an unforgettable sense of spirituality. Given the opportunity, Jim will happliy share his childhood memories of exploring the decaying forest floor, eating salmon berries and watching small creatures live their lives.

"I've always loved pictures. One of my earliest memories involves total fascination while I watched an artist draw a cowboy with a piece of chalk on a blackboard. I was about four years old and I've wanted to make pictures ever since."

Jim loved to draw and paint in early life. His father also was interested in art and talked often about subjects like perspective, composition and natural light in photography. This too, rubbed off on Jim at an early age and when the opportunity arose to rekindle those youthful passions to 'make pictures' he had a strong feeling about his creativity.

"Nature has so much to share. There is so much to paint."

Jim found that his childhood appreciation of the natural world resurfaced quickly after leaving behind a number of years of business life. There are so many old pathways to visit and so many new things to explore. He returned to old haunts in the Fraser Valley. A trip to the Pacific Rim revitalized his perspective. And he got to taste salmon berries once again. He is painting with an appreciation for the natural values he sees around him.

"I'm self taught, my style expresses much about how I feel about relationships in nature."

There are no defining lines in his work. Jim applies acrylic paint to canvas using layered "spots and dots" brush strokes to blend shapes together while also ensuring their uniqueness is supported through strong bright colours. Subject material is sourced from nature and ranges from individual flower blossoms to broad landscapes of fields, prairie, trees, mountains, water and sky that can be found almost anywhere, yet are unique to where people live and call home. Jim has lived in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. He now lives in Calgary, Alberta.

"Pointallism"?

When Jim was asked if his approach was pointallism he remarked light heartedly that it was really dotallism or spotallism which are much larger than points and evolves when an artist needs to wear trifocals. Actually the approach evolved as he explored his art and his satisfaction with its expression about values in nature. Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote in the poem Pied Beauty, "Praise God for dappled things": Jim's work does reflect a dappled essence.

"I'm very pleased to have opportunities to share my work with others."

Jim has been invited to participate in an art exhibition in Florence, Italy in December 2003. This is a juried invitation only event held every two years and is known as Biennele Internationale Dell'Arte Contemporanea. Artists are selected "solely on the merit of their works, without prejudice as to style, theme, or artistic movement. The website for this exhibition is www.artestudio.net.

"Every region of Canada has so much to offer. There is so much to paint"

Jim settled in Calgary, Alberta, after spending many years in various British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario locations. Natural surroundings are his inspiration and God's grandeur is his soul source.

A recent Fine Arts Magazine interview with Jim provides further insight to his thoughts and work.
