Joanne Victoria Moore
JOANNE VICTORIA MOORE Aboriginal artist Joanne Victoria Moore was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 30th, 1956. Growing up in the city, Joanne was not able to identify with her native roots and culture until later in life. In 1993, after the death of her grandmother, Joanne began sharing with her mother Joan Irene Moore a journey of healing and reconnection to their native heritage. Joanne's journey has taken her back to Northern Ontario, the birthplace of her grandparents, and the Shawanigaw Reserve where her grandmother Amanda Desmaison grew up as a child and later as a young woman began to paint the picturesque landscapes of the north. Joanne, like her grandmother, is a self-taught artist. She works from her home on Wolfe Lake in Powassan, Ontario. She began painting with acrylic in 1994 as a spare time activity, but it quickly became an integral part of her self-discovery and healing process. Joanne's paintings are a reflection of her native heritage combined with her life-long love for modern abstraction. In 2002, after deciding to focus solely on her career as an artist, Joanne sold her manufacturing business in Toronto and moved north. She began to work with other mediums that included flat glass. From the glass Joanne designs unique freestanding sculptures and window light catchers that are one of a kind works of art. In 2006 Joanne Victoria studied and promoted her work under well know Temagami artist Hugh McKenzie. Hugh McKenzie developed his unique style of painting while working in Ottawa in 1967 and selling his paintings with childhood friend Benjamin Chee Chee. Together they designed, painted and shared their skills as artists until Benjamin's untimely death in 1976. Joanne Victoria remains close to her friend, mentor and fellow artist Hugh McKenzie. Today Joanne Victoria Moore is a Member of the Art On Main artist collective in North Bay Ontario. Her work is currently exhibited at the Capitol Centre and the Art On Main Gallery in North Bay Ontario.
