I was raised in the Baton Rouge/New Orleans, Louisiana region of the United States, relocating to Ontario, and then followed by 20 years in Calgary, Alberta before moving to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1997. I am basically a self-taught fine artist and have sketched and painted most of my life in oil, water-color and acrylic. In 1983-84, I attended the Alberta College of Art. On completion of this formal training I was encouraged by my friends and colleagues to focus on creative fine art and painting. I was juried into active membership with the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1985. Much of my subject matter comes from my Alberta hiking experiences in the Rockies, Horse-shoe Canyon, Drumheller river valleys as well as from British Columbia in the Kootenay ranges, Gallaghers canyon and Mission creek valley, coupled with countless excursions down the rural roads of the Okanagan valley. I am also able to draw upon my experiences with the quaint subject material derived from my early New Orleans life. I exhibited in many group shows, held numerous one-artist shows in the past 20 years, and sold some of my work internationally. You may have seen my work at the Muttart Gallery, Leighton Centre, Western Canada Place, Peters Gallery and Heritage Gallery, all in Calgary, Alberta, and the Barn Gallery in Oyama, British Columbia. Teaching was my next endeavour in order to share with others the joy and gratification of creating one's own interaction with landscape, mountainscape, seascape, flowers, still-life and other fine art subjects. I still work with equal comfort with water-color, acrylic or oil. I like to think that my work exhibits the interaction of colour, design and natural light, bringing freshness to each subject. Mood, which I illustrate through the design of light and its interplay with the subject of the scene, is a common thread in most of my work. I recently expanded my canvas to the larger dimension of 40 X 40 inches and in some subjects 40 X 60 inches and ventured into the medium of acrylics, thus expanding my communication with the viewer. I love doing commission assignments and taking on the challenge of transferring to canvass the patrons emotion and interpretation of mood in the subject. I have worked with patrons incorporating their artifacts into a still-life. I have also consulted with respect to the commissioning of painting(s) to best suit a particular home décor. I use my garden as inspiration for many floral interpretations. Be sure to check out Joyce's NEW WEBSITE at www.joycequillian.com!
