Lowe's' Initials

The initials on the wall are that of the grandchildren of the Lowe family, who first settled here on this farm in Lanark County. Albert Lowe, along with his young family, came here from Perthshire, Scotland, around the 1880's.

A few years back we had one of the grandchildren of Albert Lowe come and visit us. She was rather frail and elderly, being helped by her daughter and the aid of a cane. After introducing herself in an uncomfortable, almost apologetic way, she asked if it would be possible for her to take a look around the place one more time. Alexa, my wife, took her in the house. Coming back outside once again, I told her about the initials in the drive shed and would she like to see them. It was a bit of a go, but she made her way in. When the black painted letters came into view for her, she walked brighter, with her hand out stretched, to make contact in the least amount of time. Leaning against the wall, she gently brailed each letter with her fingers. These were her long gone brothers and sisters. No one spoke. I watched her close her eyes, drinking in all the wonderful childhood memories.
