Western Artist & Woodcarver
My show booth carries the brands used by most of the cattlemen at a stockyard near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I worked there until an accident involving a couple of large bulls and a broken gate changed my direction. Lucky for the bulls, I was full of laughing gas and splinted when the ambulance left the yard. I was born in Saskatchewan, but grew up playing hockey on the West Coast and working ranches and participating in rodeos throughout Alberta. Actually, my wife says that I haven't grown up yet. The Western lifestyle, history and stories are the inspiration for my paintings. I am a self-taught artist and have produced a myriad of work through the years; however, I was always doing something else as well. After the bull wreck in spring of 2003, my wife suggested that I take up the business of art fulltime as my fingers are the only bones left unbroken. What I attempt to achieve with my art is storytelling in paint: of a way of life; my life; some of the characters I have met and places I have known along the trail.
Previously, Kim has exhibited at Trail's West Gallery in Calgary, Alberta and at End of the Line Gallery in Cochrane, Alberta. Kim participated in Winter Show '88 at the Calgary Olympics. More currently, Kim has exhibited in the Prairieland Exhibition Summer show in 2002 and 2003, winning the Multicultural Best-in-Division Award. As a member of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Artists Association, Kim has received numerous awards. Kim's work was on display at the Gallery on the Bridges in Saskatoon in 2003. July of 2004 brought Kim a First place ribbon in the watercolour class at Calgary Stampede's Western Showcase of Arts. He also received a third place ribbon in division for wood carving. During the 2004 Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Kim's painting, The Last Stray, was auctioned in the commercial cattle ring. The painting was purchased by Clarence Menegre of Pfizer Products and then presented to Brad Wildeman of the Canadian Cattleman's Association for his work fighting the U.S. beef ban. The proceeds of the sale went to the Canadian Cattleman's Association recovery strategy program. A trip to the Kamloops, B.C. Cowboy Festival in 2005 ended with a membership to the British Columbia Cowboy Heritage Society. September 2005 was a return display of Kim's work at the Gallery on the Bridges in Saskatoon. Currently Kim resides at Pike Lake, Saskatchewan (just outside of Saskatoon) with wife Kathy, daughter's Ella and Sophie Jo, two quarter horses, Roxy and Ada, Zeb the border collie and last but not least barn cats J and CC.
