In the summer of 1999, The Calgary Stampede set out to find a sculptor to create a monument that would add the finishing touches to the new 30 million dollar expansion of their Trade Show & Convention facility known as the Roundup Center. Linda Stewart was selected from among 40 artists and commissioned to create a sculpture that would portray the ranching tradition of Alberta. The Life-size bronze sculpture depicts a typical ranching scene. The casting was completed June 5, 2000 by Bronzart Casting of Calgary. The Sculpture is aptly named "ROUNDUP" and it now stands at the front entryway to the new Roundup Center. It was unveiled July 10, 2000 during the Calgary Stampede by artist, Linda Stewart, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister, Herb Grey, Calgary Stampede President, Rob Matthews, and General Manager, Steve Edwards. Linda has participated in the Calgary Stampede Art Show every year since 1981 and has recieived "BEST OF SHOW" and "COLLECTORS CHOICE" awards over the years. Linda was awarded her first large commission in 1980 after only sculpting for six months. This commission consisted of eight bronze sculptures, four life size busts and four 1/4 life size rodeo event figures for four Canadian Professional Rodeo Cowboys who died when their single-engine Cherokee went down in the mountains of Northern California in May 1979. These bronzes were unveiled at the 1981 Canadian Finals Rodeo and are now on permanent display at the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame. Linda was born in 1950 and grew up riding horses. Her artistic talents became evident at a very early age. She has been sculpting since 1980 and is well known for the subject matter she chooses - cowboys, horses, and dogs in typical ranch settings. Linda and her husband owned and operated their own foundry for six years which helped her to understand all phases of the casting process, thereby enabling her to presently collaborate with foundries to get the desired effects on her sculptures which help make them unique. Linda and her family currently reside in the small town of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. To view more of Linda's artwork, please go to her website!
