Biography

Lisa Maxine Kjernisted is an artist with an eye for the infinite within the particular. Natural wonders, architectural genius and dynamic people of her travels form the body of her photographic work; however her montages blend realistic photography with abstract colours, textures and often words or phrases to create conceptual work.

Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, she has explored places close to home as well as abroad. She lived and worked in Japan from 1996-1998, traveling extensively throughout Japan and Thailand as well as visiting Seoul, South Korea. In September 1999, she journeyed to England to photograph London, St.Albans, Stonehenge, Cornwall and Clovelly.

Lisa began her photographic journey when her parents gave her a camera for her 10th birthday. Guided by her father John and an artistic eye, Lisa's photography evolved. She enrolled in art education at the University of Victoria and began to present her travel images in new ways. The program also developed her love of teaching art to others, and as part of the program she developed elementary art curriculums. She graduated with honours in 2001. Lisa expresses her creativity mostly via photography, computer software, and the written word; however she has also worked in sculpture, architectural and graphic design, printmaking, collage, drawing and painting. Her artistic practice also involves giclee printmaking, a process utilizing archival inks, papers & industry-standard equipment to print her original imagery.

Footprints, Japan, 1996 By Lisa Maxine Kjernisted As an intuitive art-maker, Lisa sometimes has difficulty pinpointing why she creates the art she does. She cites personal experiences, socio-political circumstances, native mythology and the spiritual practice of Zen Buddhism as fundamental influences. As a result, the imagery she creates is diverse and ever-changing, often created in series to explore alternative viewpoints. Essentially, Lisa's artwork reveals a Zen-like appreciation of silent space and the ever-present serenity that exists amid the chaos of post-modern living.

Lisa continually participates in solo and collective art exhibitions and holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education, specializing in Art & Music Education from the University of Victoria, BC, CANADA. As an artist and educator, she has guided students diverse in ability from the preschool to post-secondary levels and is inspired to help people find their creative voices through visual art and music.
