Born in Texas in 1957, in a hurry, Lori moved to Alberta 37 days later. She has since lost her accent. Lori grew up and was educated in Calgary. Her life and career have been filled with many passions, oddly, things that start with the letter “A”. She graduated from The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a diploma in Architectural Technology, with a talent for architectural rendering. She was employed with the City of Calgary as a graphic artist for a time but she soon changed careers and fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a pilot. She accumulated nearly 9,000 hrs as one of the few female Airline Transport Rated Pilots of the day, licensed in Canada and the United States. She flew as a corporate pilot in an 18 year career in aviation.
In 1996 Lori switched gears again. She acquired, with a partner, an antiques business that had been established by her parents in Nanton, Alberta. In the antiques sphere she developed a love for things handmade, whether it be glass, metal, ceramics, wood or primitive folk art. Living in rural Alberta gave Lori an opportunity to become impassioned with the heritage, culture and landscape of southern Alberta. She helped to establish the Antique and Art Walk of Nanton and was also fundamental early on in the saving of the grain elevators located in Nanton. Her proposal to create in and around the elevators, a museum, gallery and school dedicated to preserving prairie and rangeland architecture, skills and art forms, helped to launch a national campaign to save the elevators. In 2003, she developed Aplastic Anemia, and while in recovery Lori decided that a time had arrived to put her artistic skills to work. Always having had an artistic gift, Lori over the years, illustrated and painted many works for corporations, conventions, not-for-profit organizations, pleasure and for friends. She now resides in High River with her two bull terriers and focuses full time on her art, but works part time as a gardener. She likes tractors and dirt. Her illustrations, paintings and sculpture all reflect the influences of a life in the southern Alberta environment. Whether they are portraits of people, animals, architecture, landscapes, and airplanes or even illustrating on abandoned furniture, Lori’s work reflects the place, the people and the world around her.
