Margery McBride Elliott

Takakkaw Falls - By Canadian Artist Margery McBride Elliott
Takakkaw Falls

Biography

"It seems it is always cliché to be 'awed by the Canadian landscape' or 'have a deep appreciation of the natural world' but in this case it is true. How else can one explain the passion which quietly envelops our land? Though this place is vast and huge, at least we can look at a small corner filled with ever-changing growth.

I used to spend my summers at a camp in northern Alberta and came to realize that even though I spent many days there, each was different and offered a new view of the space around me. The light on the lake, the colour of the trees, arriving in early May with ice still on the lake and leaving the end of august with a frost in the air and the leaves starting to change. It was amazing.

Now leading a busy life and trying to get to the mountains as often as I can, the appreciation of those days and the many days out and about have lead me to remember these moments and put them on canvas. By painting the places that I have been allows me to portray the feeling and time spent there in this fast paced and technologically advanced world. Without visiting the place, I feel I have no right to paint it since I would not be rendering it in the full sense and putting on it a feeling which I manufacture and not the truth.

I have spent my life in Calgary, to be close to my family and the mountains I love so much. Growing up we were always out doing something, whether it be skiing, camping, hiking or canoeing. Through these trips, I have gained a great deal of respect and appreciation for the outdoors but have realized that there is so much more to learn which is why I have chosen the path of art, it is a never ending learning experience, which will last my whole life."

Margery graduated from the University of Calgary in 1995, with a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in painting and photography.
