Alberta Watercolor Artist Marian Slayter
Watercolor Artist Marian Slayter

Biography

As my children grow older, I feel an intense desire to return to my love of painting, and graphic design. Three years ago, I started dabbling in oils and have recently developed an interest in watercolour also experimenting with gouache, acrylic and mixed media.

Marian Bax-Slayter studied Art History at the University of Toronto and received her diploma in Technical Illustration from Sheridan College, Oakville Ontario in 1978.

After marrying and moving to B.C. she found herself working in a variety of managerial positions, in retail and economic statistics. Moving to St. Albert and then to Calgary, Alberta, she became involved in all aspects of Ski Area Management which grew to include marketing and sales for 6 ski areas and 2 golf courses. "The business skills I acquired are invaluable".

I love to ski, and love the outdoors. My latest passion is ocean kayaking. I have spent several weeks over the past two summers exploring the islands around Vancouver Island. Other recent kayaking trips include the mangroves St. Thomas, USVI and the shores of Manzanillo, Mexico where the ocean creatures and snorkeling were amazing. I am slowly coming to the conclusion, that painting water, ocean, mountains is what I love the most.

Leaving the business world behind and concentrating on the artistic and creative aspects of life have made a dramatic change in my life. It has caused me to re-look and re-think everything I do. It was very easy to get caught up in the busy pace of career and family. I am very grateful that I got the wakeup call to change direction.

Flowers of Gold By Canadian Watercolor Aritst Marian Slayter "I believe that the individual expression of painting allows us to constantly explore the beauty we see in our surroundings. I enjoy painting outdoors and strive to capture the moment. I am becoming more concerned with the use and intensity of colour, texture and light. I am drawn towards an urge to create a sense design rather than a photo realistic interpretation of what I see. Soft and hard lines, negative images, blending, mixing and the effects that each brush stoke has with another continues to inspire me to do more. The sense that once one painting is done, the next one is waiting … I am continually learning and growing!"

I enjoy working in a variety of mediums, to explore the endless possibilities. Impressionists and colorists alike inspire me as well as artists who have mastered mixed media effects. I currently handle a variety of graphic assignments, both computer and hand rendered. I enjoy different aspects of nature, gardens, architectural renderings, mountains landscapes, as well as portraits of people and animals.

Marian has attended a variety of workshops and has recently started her own Artist Workshop Business, called Mountains West Art Adventures. www.artadventures.com

"I love to meet other successful artists, to see what inspires them, to see firsthand how they meet the challenge of depicting their creativity. I also love to travel. My experience with group sales and in the tourism industry afforded me the insight that to marry the two is a natural. I can offer artists workshops at venues of their choice. I call it workshops in creative and inspiring locations … creating memories to last a lifetime….!"

"You wouldn't believe the response, both from artists and participants. I really think that the way to learn is from the best. To paint in relaxing and new locations helps us to absorb everything we are taught. This also affords us the opportunity to experience a variety of techniques by example, which can only help us to fine tune our own individual styles and interpretations!"
