Canadian Artist - Michele Zarb
Michele Zarb

Biography

Michele grew up living and traveling extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Living in so many different regions exposed Michele to a wide variety of cultures, which has influenced her art in many different ways. Her interest in art started at an early age, winning her first art competition at age six. Throughout her school years, she took as many art classes as possible, joining quite a few after school programs. Michele continued with art instruction throughout most of her adult life as well. Michele finally found her true home on the Canadian Prairies in 1988, and inspired by her surroundings, devoted herself to painting professionally.

Michele’s love for the rich culture and heritage of the Northern Plains is evident in her work. Spiritual and introspective by nature, Michele’s art reflects these qualities in all things. Her favorite subject is the Plains Indian, and she has spent countless hours researching in libraries and archives, as well as interviewing First Nations people. Michele finds their culture, artifacts and spirituality fascinating. She discovers endless subjects with the mystery, symbols, color, tradition and dignity of the Native people.

Beyond technical ability, Michele feels an artist’s biggest challenge is to evoke emotion. To capture a fleeting moment or mood, involving the viewer in more than a photographic translation. She mixes traditional subject matter with non-traditional style and flair.

Michele’s diverse work portrays the full range of human emotion, from thoughtful quiet images to vibrant, colorful, and exciting portrayals.

In addition to painting, Michele has been teaching art for over 10 years. She encourages each student to find their own way of expression, using an individual approach to meet each student’s needs. She gives demonstrations and workshops for many art clubs and associations throughout southern Alberta, as well as on-going classes for adults. Michele teaches a variety of mediums, including oil, pastel, watercolor, drawing, and gold leafing.

Michele’s work has been accepted in international competitions in Canada and the United States. She has been elected membership in various art organizations throughout North America. She was the only artist in Canada accepted to the Cowboy Artists of America Workshop in Bozeman, Montana. Michele’s work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, the Middle East and Japan.
