I was born in Kindersley Saskatchewan, in 1956, the youngest of four children. We were raised on a farm west of town. Growing up on the farm instilled solid values and hard work ethics in all of us. I was a curious child with a keen eye for my natural surroundings and once my chores were done, I was free to roam, and it is here where I developed my senses, to see things from an artistic angle. I have been drawing most of my life, and I have always enjoyed it. I experimented with painting when I was sixteen, but found I enjoyed drawing more and went back to pencil and paper for several more years. As a nature lover, I have been fortunate to be able to travel extensively in the Beautiful Northern Country of Saskatchewan. I have always liked to be out in the wild, the lakes, trees and animals have always been very special to me, and as an artist, my inspiration!
In 1984, I tried my hand at decoy carving, working almost exclusively with
Butternut, it is such a beautiful wood to work with, I purchase all my supplies
at specialized wood dealers, every piece that I have done, except the first is
in private collections. After an industrial accident in 1994, I lost the use of my right wrist and part of my hand, though unfortunate, it had given me a wake up call, and lots of time in between surgeries and doctor visits to reflect, so I decided to try oil painting once again. I traveled to Calgary Alberta in August of 1999, and attended an art workshop, just to see if I could use my left hand to paint, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made! Over the past few years, I have developed my own style and technique, working exclusively in oil paints. I find this medium to be the best for me to express my passion for the outdoors, beautiful sunsets, and rugged mountain terrain. Now when I travel, camera and sketch pad in hand, I see hidden details, the awesome power of nature providing me with an unending story to tell. My work is in many private collections around the world. I have displayed and sold my art at the annual trade show they have here in Kindersley, and also at the local mall. I hope one day to make this, my passion, my full time profession. I am currently taking commissioned pieces, please contact Norm Krogstad directly.
