 Plein Air Artist Phil Chadwick |
Phil now spends most of his art time painting outside in the weather - "Plein Air". He will still do a few studio pieces when the weather is especially nasty but that doesn't happen too often. As a result, his style has become increasingly loose and painterly. One has to concentrate on colour and shapes when the subject matter changes quickly in the natural world. There is no time for stifling detail and plus, "plein air" is "tons of fun".
Inspiration comes from the natural world and it is boundless. Seemingly everyday colours and shapes can be inspirational. Phil will often complete a sketch looking one direction then take a few steps, turn around and see what can be captured in the other direction. Of course, the family including all of the pets continue, to be inspirational as well. However, with Phil's meteorological and canoeing background, weather and water tend to be the main inspiration for his art.
