Rhonda Lund - Canadian Artist

Biography

My formal education in art during completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Lethbridge offered me the exposure to the masterful work of great artists. This inspiration, intertwined with my innate and powerful relationship with nature, solidified my quest for a life in the arts. My childhood spent amidst idyllic, rural, earthly surroundings in northern Alberta lent itself to the thousand afternoons spent with sketchbook and pencil along country roads and coulees in my adult life.

After acquiring a degree in teaching specializing in Art Education from the University of Alberta I was able to explore and experiment with technique and style through the interaction and sharing with my students. Their creative enthusiasm, plus the energy of my own two children, though demanding, offered inspiration that would guide me to my own drawing board in the late hours when the day was quiet.

Though I work in a variety of mediums the originals of the work you see here were done in acrylic on canvas or hardboard. The subjects I choose are a reflection of my own environment and experiences. Years as a hockey parent left me with the impression that underneath the politics of hockey is essentially the influence of the prairie environment; out of the long, harsh and cold winters there came the competitive and vigorous spirit evident in hockey. The Canadian identity is largely influenced by this sport and so I have included symbolic elements such as CNN railway cars and cattails.
