Artist's Statement
This painting was inspired by my African heritage and I wanted to depict a woman in an African setting which would show her struggle and suffering within the wrinkles of her face. In this painting, I was able to show this by emphasizing light and dark contrasts that would exsentuate these lines and make them more defined. As a black woman myself, this painting inspired me and helped me to understand the struggles black people live with many years ago and still in today's society.
