Ian Danac Ketchup, Beer and Mayo
Ketchup, Beer and Mayo12h x 24w x 2d
This painting is as close to the true colours of the Canadian flag as I have attempted thus far. It’s loosely based on my existence as a starving art student at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto.
The contents of my small bar fridge in my one room flat only housed a few things: ketchup in small take away, tear away packages, beer and a never touched jar of mayonnaise. The mayo was part of a care package my mom gave me as I went off to art college at the age of 16.
Being a starving art student never felt right to me. I was too young! I wanted to live! I left art college and without much of an education I forged a pretty good life and resume of experiences.
Recently, I returned to making art. Though it could be argued, that I have made art all my life. I have designed clothes, jewelry, flowers and designed interiors. I made a feature film and toured all over North America with it. However, after all my successes, I did feel I was starving. I wanted to paint...and now it’s all I do. :)
This low relief, cardboard collage, is sculpted with many layers of gesso, then painted in high grade acrylics. The paint is applied in layers. Each layer is then distressed. The work is done on a high grade, gallery style canvas and is lacquered in high gloss, premium, acrylic varnish. The sides are stained a translucent ochre and similarly varnished.
