HMCS Moose Jaw was racing to join an Atlantic convoy SC 42 in the Denmark Strait, and on the night of September 10th 1941 in company with HMCS Chambly a submarine was located by HMCS Chambly. Proceeded to depth charge, U501 was forced to the surface.
While attempting to cut across the bow of HMCS Moose Jaw U 501 was rammed and sank following the impact. This was the first U boat sunk by Canadian forces in the battle of the Atlantic. I have recorded many of the Canadian Corvettes that were escorts through this long battle for supremacy of the Atlantic. My own interest stems from my childhood years in England and the food parcels that regularly arrived from an aunt in the USA that sustained our family through this long war. These parcels would no doubt have crossed the Atlantic and come safely through because of the untiring and steadfast courage of those who sailed the merchant ships and those who protected them.
