Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939, Dave's lifelong ambition was to become a professional artist. This goal was achieved at the age of 40 when he made the decision to leave a successful career in the advertising world and trade his briefcase for a paint box and pastels. His paintings and limited edition reproductions can be viewed in galleries across Canada and the U.S.
He creates his popular paintings in his studio/gallery, a restored 150 year old log home near Orillia, Ontario. This studio/gallery is also a teaching location for his pastel workshops. When not at home, Dave is gathering material canoeing on a quiet misty lake in Algonquin Park, roaming a secluded beach on the west coast of B.C. or Mexico and sketching the nostalgic rural buildings of early North America.
He is in major exhibitions including The Pacific Rim Wildlife exhibition in 1996. The Buckhorn Wildlife Festival is a favourite annual event for Dave;s collectors and has been since 1986. Beckett's paintings are in many private and corporate collections. The include Government of Canada; Province of Ontario; major Bank collections at home, in Europe, the U.K., Japan, and South Africa.
He is an elected member of The Pastel Society of Canada (PSC) and was recently awarded the title of Premiere Pastellist of Canada (PPC). He is a life member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA), an international organization of distinguished pastellists. Dave is also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. His work has been featured in leading Canadian and American Art publications.
There is a special feeling in Dave's work, a feeling of being part of the subject or landscape. "I don't limit myself to landscape but paint what inspires me. If the sun touches a particular vase of flowers in a special way, I paint it. The inspiration for a subject is an expression of light. The setting sun on the water ... the reflection of the shore at low tide ... the mist rising on a tranquil lake ... these are just three of my favourite subjects. I have been given this gift to create paintings so others can be lifted out of their everyday routine ... and take time to smell the roses or the salt sea air."
