ELLEN COWIE Oil Painting Artist Ellen Cowie |
ELLEN COWIE is an artist who specializes in oil painting. After living in small communities across Canada, she currently resides in Peterborough, Ontario. She graduated from high school with a Fine Arts Award in 1980 and went on to study Fine Art at Guelph University. The next five years she resided in Canada’s beautiful Provincial and National Parks. She has lived and traveled across Ontario, the Prairies and Canada’s North. This lifestyle led to an intimate contact with nature and the isolation allowed her to explore her oil painting. Ellen strives to portray life in her art as she experiences it.
"I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to hone my painting skills as I raised my six children. I strive daily to bring something new to my work. The kaleidoscope of my life gives me limitless possibilities upon which I freely base my paintings. The only constraints I put on my art is my strong desire to bring a smile to people when they view my work. Over the past twenty three years my work has developed and evolved into a very distinctive and individual style. Creating new images on canvas is an exhilarating journey and one which I invite you to enjoy!"
Art has been her passion since childhood, fueled by her grandmother’s oil paintings as well as watching her uncle sketch in charcoal with skillful hands. Ellen strives to portray life in her art as she experiences it. Ellen is passionate and unwavering in exploring and liberating a wide range of motifs on her canvas with deliberate freedom. Her children are the natural models that steer her artwork. Her landscape and wildlife paintings express images she has been so fortunate to encounter during her travels. Portraiture is an area she has had a natural affinity for since childhood. Ellen treasures the varied gifts in her life, and her strength as an individual reflects in her art. She paints people, places and animals from her heart, yet with an astute sense of reality, so that each painting is a loving representation of the world as seen through her eyes.
Ellen’s sensitivity to detail as well as her expressiveness in her vivid oil interpretations of people and places has most recently led to several major commissions.

Ellen's originals and limited edition prints have found their way into collections in Asia, Europe, the United States, and across Canada. Her career as an artist has become firmly established and recognized with her works having being displayed in fine galleries across Ontario, including the Gallery Shop in the McMICHAEL Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. Currently, the largest selction of her work is shown at FOOT'S BAY GALLERY on Lake Joseph in Muskoka (705-375-2473).

Live Portrait Sittings
Ellen Cowie also creates portraits from life, without the use of photographs. In the case of landscapes, several visits are necessary as the natural light changes rapidly. In the case of portraiture, the subject will need to agree to several sittings. All travel and accommodation expenses relating to these visits or sittings are in addition to the price of the painting.

Each sitting ranges from one to two hours of painting. Due to time and monetary constraints, many people prefer to have a painting commissioned from photowork.
Ellen's sensitivity to people allows her to paint the remarkable likeness of a subject in addition to highlighting his or her unique personality. Each painting is completed to the customer's satisfaction.
