Richard Brown is an artist, or to be specific, an artist armed with a pencil.
Although Richard has experience with many different media including oils, watercolor, and pastel, the humble graphite pencil has become the focus of his artistic efforts of late. Some might say this focus has become a passion, and in fact, graphite pencil art represents his sole means of artistic expression today.
This very simple tool has been used by Richard to interpret his view of the world for many years. In Richard's eyes, the world continues to be a never ending source of wonder and inspiration. And there has never been a shortage of material available to study.
Subject matter for a study revolves around Richard's interests. This may include personalities that have shaped his world, or the romance of exotic wildlife. It also includes, an appreciation for the simple beauty that nature has wrought, and an admiration for the mechanical devices that man has built.
And all of these subjects are given their due.
Richard is a master of both pencil drawing, and rendering. Drawing is comprised of line and form, and is certainly an art onto itself. But rendering is texture, tone and value, and rendering is in fact responsible for bringing a drawing to life.
And Richard is not satisfied until he can breathe life into a drawing.
This need to take a drawing to the level of photo-realism is probably an extension of Richard's previous studies. Richard is a mechanical engineer by training, but an artist by choice. And this appreciation for the mathematical and scientific foundation that underlies all things in nature, and all things made by man, is probably the reason for his obsession with photo-realism.
Richard has studied at the Baxter Lake Fine Arts Academy. His works are currently held in many private and corporate collections throughout North America.
